Roof leakage may seem common, but it gets to a point where you have to be very cautious about it. It may a sign of an underlying problem that could cause major damage to the structure and value of your house if roof repair is not conducted in time.

There are several causes of a leaking roof that may include bad shingles, poor installation during construction or remodeling, low quality of materials, punctured roofs, poor room ventilation or simply the age of the roof. Any of these can cause your roof to leak but the next steps, after identifying a leak in your roof, have been highlighted below.

  1. Find the cause

In order to expend resources while fixing the wrong problem, trace the root cause of the leaking. Could it be a clogged roof gutter on one side, a hole that cuts through the top and bottom layers, or simply age-old wear and tear? Finding the cause of the leak helps you to prepare for the solution that will be administered.

  1. Stop the damage

If the cause is something that can be temporarily patched up, to prevent further damage, then you should, while contacting a roofer or construction company for roofing repair. If the problem is a tree branch that got lodged into the top of the roof, first take it out and cover with strong plastic or anything that can hold off till the roofer arrives.

  1. Call for insurance

Once you find the problem, call your insurance agent to know if it is a problem that is covered with your insurance package. Often times, people spend money on fixing things that could have easily been paid for with insurance. There’s no point in having an insurance plan you can’t use so, it is best to find out what parts of the damage your insurance will cover, and what it won’t.

  1. Fix the leak

Hire an experienced roofer to come and take a look at the damage, give you a breakdown and get to work on fixing the problem, or replacing your roof. Be sure to pick a good roofer to make sure you get the best service.

  1. Prevent future leaks

Take preventive measures to make sure the leak doesn’t become a constant fixture in your home. If it caused by clogged gutters, be sure to clear them frequently and, if a roof repair won’t be enough, you might as well replace the roof.

Conduct routine checks to be sure no part of your house has a leaking roof and if you find any, follow the steps above for effective roof repair. Also, remember that hiring a good roofer is very important to keep your roof in premium condition.
